BETHELSDORP - COP CHASES DOWN ARMED ROBBERS EVEN AFTER BEING SHOT TWICE

A BRAVE police detective showed his mettle when he continued to pursue a gang of suspected robbers – despite being shot twice in the leg. His valiant efforts contributed to the arrest of two suspects, one of whom was also wounded.

A late-night gun battle in Bethelsdorp, Port Elizabeth, between the undercover detective and the armed gang on Tuesday followed a tip-off.

The suspects, who were armed with at least one semi-automatic assault rifle, started shooting at Warrant Officer Kaya Makaula, 48, while he was following up the tip-off about men with firearms in Dano Street in Govan Mbeki Township.

More than 40 shots were exchanged between the gunmen and Makaula, who is from the Motherwell detective branch.

The gang is allegedly made up of “wellknown” robbers who have pending cases for violent crimes such as house robbery involving firearms.

Police suspect the men were preparing for a heist when they were interrupted.
